“I grew up on the coast of England in the 70s. My dad is white, from Cornwall, and my mom is black, from Zimbabwe. Even the idea of us as a family was challenging to most people. But nature had it’s wicked way and brown babies were born. But from about the age of 5, I was aware that I didn’t fit. I was the black, atheist kid in the all-white Catholic school run by nuns. I was an anomaly. And myself was rooting around for definition trying to plug-in. Because the self likes to fit. To see itself replicated. To belong. That confirms it’s existence and it’s importance. And it is important, it has an extremely important function. Without it we literally can’t interface with others, we can’t hatch plans, and climb that stairway of popularity, of success. But my skin color wasn’t right. My hair wasn’t right. My history wasn’t right. Myself, became defined by Otherness, which meant that in that social world I didn’t really exist. And I was Other before being anything else, even before being a girl. I was a noticeable nobody.” —Thandie Newton (Ted Talks: “Embracing otherness, embracing myself”)

Photographic Moratorium: You Don’t Skate!
Each week, we choose a photographic cliché that we think should never be used by anyone again, ever.
This week: that picture you took of that hot girl (or guy who kinda looks like a girl) who clearly doesn’t know how to skate, posing next to, on, or holding a skateboard. Give it a rest, posers.

Vice got something completely right for a change. Winds me up so much. Skateboarding has all of a sudden become cool, and while I back this, I can still remember when I was skating around and girls generally would look down their nose at anyone who skated. It reminds me of the situation that bodyboarding went through years ago, when it was super popular until people got bored and the big sponsors pulled, including quiksilver who dropped their entire bodyboarding team. Trends come and go, but some people should understand that trying desperately to jump from one trend to another will only leave you in a really lonely and depressed state one day. Know what you like, and just do that. The only requirements in life are your own. I’m sure skateboarders all over are kinda getting bored of this shit too.

“You don’t come back in here until you’ve apologized to every person in this room, Because you just exercised a freedom that none of these people of color have. When these people of color get tired of racism, they can’t just walk out, because there’s no place in this country where they aren’t going to be exposed to racism. They can’t even stay in their own homes and not be exposed to racism if they turn on their television. But you, as a white female, when you get tired of being judged and treated unfairly on the basis of your eye color, you can walk out that door, and you know it won’t happen out there. You exercised a freedom they don’t have. If you’re going to be in here you’re going to apologize to every person of color in this room. And do it now.”

“I’m sorry there’s racism in this country—

“BULLSHIT! No, you’re not going to say ‘I’m sorry there’s racism.’ You’re going to apologize for what YOU just did.”

“I will not apologize because it’s not a matter of race always—”

“OUT.”
